In twelfth-century Spain, a starving nation is summoned night after night to the palace’s midnight banquets, with tables groaning under black-poached fig cakes, Neapolitans, ice biscuits, Pommes à la Royale, lobster cremé canapés, and roasts dripping with rich sauce. The people eat until they can eat no more, yet their hunger is never truly satisfied, as if something essential is missing.

 

When Hunter, a humble pâtissier-turned-mortician, discovers that this gnawing hunger, a trail of royal corpses, and a forbidden fountain of youth are bound together in a ruthless royal plot for absolute dominion, he is drawn into rebellion with a small band of insurgents and must decide who deserves saving and what price he’s willing to pay as they carry the fight across Spain into the treacherous heights of the French Pyrenees, where the hunger for immortality collides with the most primal appetite of all:
